Texas cracking down on teachers who have relationships with kids

Texas is looking into creating harsher penalties for teachers who participate in sexual relationships with students, according to a report from Jan. 26. The news reports that this determination was made after a teacher in Dallas was alleged to have slept with a student she was teaching in middle school.

The Texas Education Agency has stated that between September and December 2016, it has been dealing with 80 reports of inappropriate teacher-student relationships. For example, two Central Texas teachers were accused of being in appropriate with students in 2016, but there are some loopholes that are making it possible for the teachers to continue to teach.

The issue is that some teachers resign when they’re accused of these charges. Then, they move to a different district, where there’s a potential to reoffend. Currently, it’s not legal for a teacher to have an inappropriate relationship with a student in his or her own district, but there is no law about dating or having a relationship with students outside the district.

Presently, those who obtain deferred adjudication, which is a kind of probation, won’t lose their licenses and may be able to continue to teach. This is something that can work in your favor if you’re accused or even convicted of a crime. In fact, with this process, you may be able to keep your license and job even if you have to change districts.

If you’re accused of a crime, you need to defend yourself because of crackdowns like this one. With the right help, you may be able to avoid a conviction.
