If you’ve been accused of a crime, then you’re probably ready to hire a criminal defense lawyer. What should you look for in a good lawyer? Are there certain traits that are more admirable or desirable? What can you expect from a good criminal defense lawyer?

The first thing you can expect is that your defense lawyer will want to know about the crime you’ve been accused of. He or she will need to know all the details; the more truthful you can be, the better. Without the full story, your lawyer won’t be able to give you all the options open to you for defending your case.

Your lawyer will listen and be able to provide you with information on what to expect; if there’s not much you can do to prove your innocence but a plea is possible, he or she is likely to explain that to you early on. Your lawyer should not give you false information or unrealistic expectations.

Your lawyer should help you with the emotional strain the criminal trial puts on you. You might feel depressed or be worried about the trial, but your lawyer should be able to alleviate some of those fears for you.

Your lawyer will be able to work with you and the prosecution to negotiate in the case that you want to make a plea bargain. These deals usually offer you a reduced sentence or could even eliminate the charges that have been placed against you. It’s important to work with your attorney at that stage, because many prosecutors won’t negotiate with you if you’re representing yourself.
